Song of the day:
There goes my baby with someone new
She sure looks happy, I sure am blue
She was my baby 'til he stepped in
Goodbye to romance that might have been.

Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think I'm gonna cry-y
Bye bye love,
Bye bye sweet caress,
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could di-ie
Bye bye my love goodby-eye

Today in History:

Nothing all that interesting happened. Sorry. I just couldn't build up the excitement to expound on any of the items in history.

But if you have to know...

In 1570, Pope Pius V excommunicated England's Queen Elizabeth I.

In 1836, inventor Samuel Colt patented his revolver. Hwever, according to Pabst.com, "For over four decades Colt 45 Premium Malt Liquor has been the 'Class of the Malt Liquor Brands'. It has become a proud icon of each generation it has been a part of. As the music, fashion and lifestyles of distinctive trend-setters have changed, Colt 45 Premium Malt Liquor has been the adult beverage of choice to complement those evolving styles.

Elegance, smoothness, distinctiveness and timelessness have been the foundation of Colt 45 Premium Malt Liquor which is why "EVERY-TIME" is the brand's slogan and philosophy."

You simply can't argue with that logic.

In 1901, United States Steel Corp. was incorporated by J.P. Morgan.

In 1913, the 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution, giving Congress the power to levy and collect income taxes, was declared in effect.

In 1943, during World War II, U.S. troops reoccupied the Kasserine Pass.

In 1948, Communists seized power in Czechoslovakia.

In 1964, Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali) became world heavyweight boxing champion by defeating Sonny Liston in Miami Beach, Fla.

In 1973, the Stephen Sondheim musical "A Little Night Music" opened at Broadway's Shubert Theater.

In 1986, President Ferdinand E. Marcos fled the Philippines after 20 years of rule in the wake of a tainted election; Corazon Aquino assumed the presidency.

Word of the Day:
distrait \dis-TRAY\, adjective:
Divided or withdrawn in attention, especially because of anxiety.

Shakespeare Quote of the Day:

Prince. A glooming peace this morning with
it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things:
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.

Romeo and Juliet, Act V, Sc. III

Just call them Felix and Oscar....

There has been a great outpouring of support for the victims of the recent tsunami throughoout all of America. And with good reason. At the forefront has been a rather odd couple, former Presidents George Bush SR. and Bill Clinton. In the name of raising funds, they have appeared in commercials together, touring the affected areas together, and were even at the Super Bowl together.

Have they become pals? Set aside their differences from the 1992 election race and compare notes on what it is to be President? You get the feeling that they've become buddies, who head out ot the local bar or gentlemen's club (you decide which is more likely) for a cigar and a beer.

It's President's night at the Vu!!!

You can just picture Bush Sr. muttering "Jackass" under his breath when Clinton points out that he had 2 terms, while Bush only had 1. And you just KNOW he has...
Clinton gets sloshed, and Bush has to drive him home to Hillary. Helps him up the stairs of his front door and dumps him on the couch. He shakes his head silently at Bill's excesses, and athis ability to deflect the criticism that comes with, much like he did throughout his whole Presidency. Somewhere inside, he envies that.

Randy Moss Trade

The Vikings finally got to the point where it wasn't worth it anymore. they were paying Randy Moss to be a difference maker, like he was back in 1998 and 1999, etc. But as the years have passed, you saw less and less of that explosive reciever, less of the man who put fear into other teams defenses, as his own interest waned. He stated himself that he plays when he wants to play, and it was obvious that he wasn't as interested in playing hard in the most recent years. This past season was the final straw. Whatever production he gave them wasn't what he was truly capable of, and the off-the-field distraction would have been fine if he worked hard and was leading the league in yards or TD's, etc. But he wasn't putting the work in to do those things. And with a depleted defense, the Vikings knew they had to get what they could before the rest of the league caught on that he wasn't the Randy Moss of old, the one that could win a game almost on his own.

What the Vikings REALLY needed was secondary help for the defense. But the teams they were talking to weren't going to give them what they were looking for...a premier starter at corner or safety AND a high 1st round pick. Baltimore had some talent, but they weren't going to part with All Pro safety Ed Reed. Besides, they didn't have a high enough draft pick. Minnesota wanted something in the top 10.

Atlanta didn't have the talent OR the draft pick to make t worth the Vikings taling to them.

Enter Oakland. The Raiders had plenty of secondary help, AND a high draft pick. However, the Raiders either weren't willling to part with the young members of their secondary, or the Vikings failed to address it.

Either way, the Raiders gave up a 1st round pick in a draft that is rather thin on premier talent, a fast and young linebacker in the mold of the linebackers the Vikings already have, and a 7th round pick.

Advantage: Oakland.

Napoleon Harris is a very good linebacker. He may even develop into a pro bowl linebacker. However, they had plenty of fast young linebackers like him on the tema already. the difference is that Harris has been successful, whereas the others have not. The Vikings still need to address the corner and free safety spots, which can be done with their 2 first round draft picks. To do so, they've given up a dynamic WR who they wre geting less and less from on the field, and more and more headaches from off of it. They didn't get complete fair value, since none of the players they got are going to have the same impact that Randy gave them on offense. But if Randy was the same Randy Moss of 1998, the trade never would have happened in the first place. He just wasn't the same player that he used to be. The returns they got form him were diminished, even though they were paying him more. When he first came intothe league, he was up to play in every game. then it slowly dwindled downt o a big gmae, or a big matchup. This past year, he didn't even show up in a signifigant way in even the BIG games, other than the Green Bay playoff game.

It was interesing to see the Vikings fans approach to him over the years. At first they defended him mightily. As the years and incidents passed, they struggled with him. Now, they're free to hate him as much as the rest of us did.

I think the Raiders got the better of the deal, giving up just 1st round pick and a good but not yet great linebacker, without having to give up young good defensive back talent. That said, I don't thik you can count the Vikings as losers in this deal, as you can't put a price on freeing yourself form the headaches he created.

Hometown Hotties, Week 2!

WE don't have time to cover the Week 1 winners, so we'll have to jump right into week 2.

After looking abck at my post from last week, it seems taht quite a bit of what I wrote was SHEARED OFF the end. I had gone to great lengths to break down the final 10. That hopefully should not happen this time.
