Song of the day:
There goes my baby with someone new
She sure looks happy, I sure am blue
She was my baby 'til he stepped in
Goodbye to romance that might have been.

Bye bye love
Bye bye happiness
Hello loneliness
I think I'm gonna cry-y
Bye bye love,
Bye bye sweet caress,
Hello emptiness
I feel like I could di-ie
Bye bye my love goodby-eye

Today in History:

Nothing all that interesting happened. Sorry. I just couldn't build up the excitement to expound on any of the items in history.

But if you have to know...

In 1570, Pope Pius V excommunicated England's Queen Elizabeth I.

In 1836, inventor Samuel Colt patented his revolver. Hwever, according to Pabst.com, "For over four decades Colt 45 Premium Malt Liquor has been the 'Class of the Malt Liquor Brands'. It has become a proud icon of each generation it has been a part of. As the music, fashion and lifestyles of distinctive trend-setters have changed, Colt 45 Premium Malt Liquor has been the adult beverage of choice to complement those evolving styles.

Elegance, smoothness, distinctiveness and timelessness have been the foundation of Colt 45 Premium Malt Liquor which is why "EVERY-TIME" is the brand's slogan and philosophy."

You simply can't argue with that logic.

In 1901, United States Steel Corp. was incorporated by J.P. Morgan.

In 1913, the 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution, giving Congress the power to levy and collect income taxes, was declared in effect.

In 1943, during World War II, U.S. troops reoccupied the Kasserine Pass.

In 1948, Communists seized power in Czechoslovakia.

In 1964, Cassius Clay (later Muhammad Ali) became world heavyweight boxing champion by defeating Sonny Liston in Miami Beach, Fla.

In 1973, the Stephen Sondheim musical "A Little Night Music" opened at Broadway's Shubert Theater.

In 1986, President Ferdinand E. Marcos fled the Philippines after 20 years of rule in the wake of a tainted election; Corazon Aquino assumed the presidency.

Word of the Day:
distrait \dis-TRAY\, adjective:
Divided or withdrawn in attention, especially because of anxiety.

Shakespeare Quote of the Day:

Prince. A glooming peace this morning with
it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things:
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.

Just call them Felix and Oscar....

There has been a great outpouring of support for the victims of the recent tsunami throughoout all of America. And with good reason. At the forefront has been a rather odd couple, former Presidents George Bush SR. and Bill Clinton. In the name of raising funds, they have appeared in commercials together, touring the affected areas together, and were even at the Super Bowl together.

Have they become pals? Set aside their differences from the 1992 election race and compare notes on what it is to be President? You get the feeling that they've become buddies, who head out ot the local bar or gentlemen's club (you decide which is more likely) for a cigar and a beer.

It's President's night at the Vu!!!

You can just picture Bush Sr. muttering "Jackass" under his breath when Clinton points out that he had 2 terms, while Bush only had 1. And you just KNOW he has...
Clinton gets sloshed, and Bush has to drive him home to Hillary. Helps him up the stairs of his front door and dumps him on the couch. He shakes his head silently at Bill's excesses, and athis ability to deflect the criticism that comes with, much like he did throughout his whole Presidency. Somewhere inside, he envies that.

Randy Moss Trade

The Vikings finally got to the point where it wasn't worth it anymore. they were paying Randy Moss to be a difference maker, like he was back in 1998 and 1999, etc. But as the years have passed, you saw less and less of that explosive reciever, less of the man who put fear into other teams defenses, as his own interest waned. He stated himself that he plays when he wants to play, and it was obvious that he wasn't as interested in playing hard in the most recent years. This past season was the final straw. Whatever production he gave them wasn't what he was truly capable of, and the off-the-field distraction would have been fine if he worked hard and was leading the league in yards or TD's, etc. But he wasn't putting the work in to do those things. And with a depleted defense, the Vikings knew they had to get what they could before the rest of the league caught on that he wasn't the Randy Moss of old, the one that could win a game almost on his own.

What the Vikings REALLY needed was secondary help for the defense. But the teams they were talking to weren't going to give them what they were looking for...a premier starter at corner or safety AND a high 1st round pick. Baltimore had some talent, but they weren't going to part with All Pro safety Ed Reed. Besides, they didn't have a high enough draft pick. Minnesota wanted something in the top 10.

Atlanta didn't have the talent OR the draft pick to make t worth the Vikings taling to them.

Enter Oakland. The Raiders had plenty of secondary help, AND a high draft pick. However, the Raiders either weren't willling to part with the young members of their secondary, or the Vikings failed to address it.

Either way, the Raiders gave up a 1st round pick in a draft that is rather thin on premier talent, a fast and young linebacker in the mold of the linebackers the Vikings already have, and a 7th round pick.

Advantage: Oakland.

Napoleon Harris is a very good linebacker. He may even develop into a pro bowl linebacker. However, they had plenty of fast young linebackers like him on the tema already. the difference is that Harris has been successful, whereas the others have not. The Vikings still need to address the corner and free safety spots, which can be done with their 2 first round draft picks. To do so, they've given up a dynamic WR who they wre geting less and less from on the field, and more and more headaches from off of it. They didn't get complete fair value, since none of the players they got are going to have the same impact that Randy gave them on offense. But if Randy was the same Randy Moss of 1998, the trade never would have happened in the first place. He just wasn't the same player that he used to be. The returns they got form him were diminished, even though they were paying him more. When he first came intothe league, he was up to play in every game. then it slowly dwindled downt o a big gmae, or a big matchup. This past year, he didn't even show up in a signifigant way in even the BIG games, other than the Green Bay playoff game.

It was interesing to see the Vikings fans approach to him over the years. At first they defended him mightily. As the years and incidents passed, they struggled with him. Now, they're free to hate him as much as the rest of us did.

I think the Raiders got the better of the deal, giving up just 1st round pick and a good but not yet great linebacker, without having to give up young good defensive back talent. That said, I don't thik you can count the Vikings as losers in this deal, as you can't put a price on freeing yourself form the headaches he created.

Hometown Hotties, Week 2!

WE don't have time to cover the Week 1 winners, so we'll have to jump right into week 2.

After looking abck at my post from last week, it seems taht quite a bit of what I wrote was SHEARED OFF the end. I had gone to great lengths to break down the final 10. That hopefully should not happen this time.

Song of the Day:
Thought I'd visit the club
Got as far as the door
They'd have asked me about you
Don't get around much anymore

Darling, I guess my mind's more at ease
But nevertheless, why stir up memories

Been invited on dates
Might have gone but what for
Awfully different without you
Don't get around much anymore

This Day in History:

In 1564, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa.

From The Writer's Almanac-
He devised a simple open-air thermometer (1607), but his greatest breakthrough was to build an improved refracting telescope (1609), with which he clearly confirmed the view of Copernicus, who insisted Aristotle was wrong, the Earth was not the center of things; the Sun was. Galileo's books were banned; he was summoned to Rome, to be tried for heresy. In 1633 he was convicted, sentenced to house arrest for life, and his books were ordered burned. He was forced either to renounce all his Copernican beliefs or be tortured on the rack. While signing his declaration that the earth was stationary, he muttered, "And yet... it moves." Confined to his home, he continued to study physics and astronomy, until, in his seventies, he grew completely blind.

In 1989, NASA sent a satelite to study Jupiter, and named it after Galileo. You can read about that here.

In 1764, the city of St. Louis was established.

In 1820, American suffragist Susan B. Anthony was born in Adams, Mass.

In 1879, President Hayes signed a bill allowing female attorneys to argue cases before the Supreme Court.

In 1898, the U.S. battleship Maine mysteriously blew up in Havana Harbor, killing more than 260 crew members and bringing the United States closer to war with Spain.

In 1933, President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt escaped an assassination attempt in Miami that claimed the life of Chicago Mayor Anton J. Cermak.

In 1942, the British colony Singapore surrendered to the Japanese during World War II.

In 1961, 73 people, including an 18-member U.S. figure skating team en route to Czechoslovakia, were killed in the crash of a Sabena Airlines Boeing 707 in Belgium.

In 1982, 84 men were killed when a huge oil-drilling rig, the Ocean Ranger, sank off the coast of Newfoundland during a fierce storm.

In 1989, the Soviet Union announced that the last of its troops had left Afghanistan, after more than nine years of military intervention.

Shakespeare Quote of the Day:
Ham. If thou dost marry, I'll give thee this
plague for thy dowry: be thou as chaste as ice,
as pure as snow, thou shalt not escape calumny,
Get thee to a nunnery, go; farewell. Or, if thou.
wilt needs marry, marry a fool; for wise men
know well enough what monsters you make of
them. To a nunnery, go; and quickly too.
Farewell.
Oph. O heavenly powers, restore him!
Ham. I have heard of your paintings too,
well enough; God hath given you one face, and
you make yourselves another: you jig, you
amble, and you lisp, and nickname God's crea-
tures, and make your wantonness your ignorance.
Go to, I'll no more on't; It hath made me mad,
I say, we will have no more marriages; those

the rest shall keep as they are. To a nunnery, go.

Random Picture of Paz Vega:

Twins sign Johan Santana

The Twins have been able to sign their best pitcher for 4 years, and $40 million. This is a huge step for the Twins since it locks up their best chance to win the division, with a strong lefthanded pitcher for some time. And if the club flounders to the point that they need a new influx of talent, they'll be able to trade him and get more value for him than they would have if he had to be traded this year.

That said, the last thing the team wants to do is trade him. If they continue to have success, he should be a major driving force on their pitching staff and propel them to a few more division championships. This, with the development of some of the younger players ion teh pipeline, should set the Twins up to be competitive for at least the next few years.

Inner Warmth during the winter months

My friends, we are heading into a premier time of women objectification. Some of you may not appreciate that, and for that I apologize. However, since it is February, and post-Super Bowl, and much time before Baseball stats in earnest, and precious little else to keep my attention since I don't get into basketball... well, a man has to find SOMETHING to entertain himself!

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue is due out very soonand like in years past, the daily Update will strive to provide a critique of such. In the meantime however....

Hometown Hotties 2005!!

Each Year, MaximOnline.com presents the Hometown Hotties contest, aloowing beautiful women all over the country to submit pictures of themselves to be judged by people like yours truly, and hope to win our affections and leerings andbe crowned the Hometown Hottie. Last year, We tracked this phenomenon as it progressed throughout the year, and we return this year, ever more hopeful that our vote will count, and we can consider ourselves amngst the few who saw the rise of said hottie long before she attained her rightful place on top of a pillar, in only to make it easier to look up her skirt. Thus endeth the run-on sentance.

The criteria for every persons choices are diffeent. However, if you are going to subscribe to the Daily Update way of thinking when choosing amongst all of the lovely women, then know that the following guidelines are in place:

1. The women chosen must be hot and cause a stirring within. (Obviously)
2. The lesser the piercings, the better. ear piercings are fine, but beyond that...it's hard to find a woman who isn't pierced all over the place anymore. I'm just saying it's rare, is all.
3. Same goes for tatoos. The lesser the better. And if she has to have one, the smaller the better. We'e not completely dismissing women with tattoos, but it's a rare woman who doesn't have either a weird piercing or a tattoo, much less both.
4. The girl has to look like she's having fun. If she's bored, it makes it no fun for us either.
5. Though not absolute, girls in ballcaps stand a greater chance of getting voted for.
6. Again, not absolute, being a Green Bay Packer fan hurts your chances.
7. Little or no clothing increases your odds. Fair or not...well, I am a guy, so it's just how it is. If that makes me a pig, then a pig I shall be.

Now, onto the Week 1 field!

Row 1: Brooke, TX gets us started, and gets us started quickly, which follows the C and C Music Factory accordance of 1992; I admit it, Kristi, NJ got me with the plaid skirt, white top, and stockings. She won't move on to the top 10, but it gives me something to think about. Stephanie has some nice legs, but beyond that...no connection.

Row 2: Limarys, Pa is a pre-school teacher. They must have alot of fire drills, since she probabl sets off the smoke detectors. Kristina of FL could have made it, but she glared in each one of her pictures...never pick a mad woman. Stacy of nearby Woodbury, MN just looked like a bitch.

Row 3: Sasha, CA (though it may be because she has a certain Adult film star quality to her...). Nothing else of note in this line, from what I can see.

row 4: Kristal, NH;Really green eyes stand out, if you can peel your eyes off of her bust. Tiffany, FL. If I have to explain, then you will never understand.

row 5: Maggie, CT; Nikki of SC had some hot pictures (licking a cupcake wrapper), but ultimately it wasn't enough to overcome her resemblance to Celine Dion.

row 6: IF there was ever an example for Guideline #4, it's Rebekah, of WA. She is NOT one of our choices, for the simople reason that she looks pissed that her picture is being taken at all. Ranelle of MI, however... now that is what we are looking for!

row 7: It's hard to believe that the contest is already won in week one, but it's going to be very hard to improve upon Rhonda of FL. I mean, wow. WOW. Of ourse, Claudia of FL holds her own quite well too. KimLoan of TX makes row 7 my favorite so far. That was fun!

row 8: Aaryn of AZ spells her name weird, but whn you look like that, it doesn't matter. TO be honest, Michelle of IL stands only an outside shot of getting into the top 10 for thisweek. But she looks great wearing a ball cap, thus justifying Guideline #5. Lauren of FL makes me wonder why the H*ll I'm not in FL right this d*mned moment. Ari of OH really doesn't have a chance in the top 10, but I should point out that she was a camp counselor. Why, oh WHY weren't my camp counselors looking like that?

Row 9: Ooooh, I think I'm in trouble. Row 9 has plenty to talk about, starting with Mariana of FL, and Jessica of FL too. Jessica violates the tattoo and piercing guidelines, but has enough hotness that we can't possibly leave her off the list. Francesca of WA has a great island look about her. Jenna of CA has a belly piercing. I don't care. She reminds me of an even hotter Lucy Liu with a bigger bosom. To state the obvious, that is a good thing.

Improve on this? That MUST be something good.

Danelle of NY isn't sepcatacular in any one way, but her smile really stands out, and really adds a special charm to her that should be noted here. Naomi of AR proves that there are hot women in places other than FL. Should we go with the old joke about what Naomi spelled backwards is? I think we just did.

Row 10: Apparently, we just needed to pick up some momentum, because Row 10 has a bit to choose from as well. Loni of KS is there, and I am here. We're too far apart for my tastes. Course, were she standing a foot in front of me, she might be too far away for my tastes. 8" sounds about the right length away. No, wait. That'd put her just out of reach. She'd need to be closer.

Did I just share more than I should?

Julia of IL is next, and deserves our attention. She lives in my favorite town, too. So very much going for her. Bree of Ca, however, brings back more memories of Celine Dion, and that's just leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I think I'll go back and look at Rhonda of FL for a bit.

Song of the Day:

Oh but I think she's leaving
OH man, she's leaving
And I don't know what else to do
(Can't go on not loving you)

Cause it's all in my head
I think about it
Over and over again
And I can't keep
Picturing you with him
And it hurts so bad
Yeah, cause it's all in my head
I think about it
Over and over again
I replay it
Over and over again
And I can't take it
I can't shake it, no

This Day in History:

In 1631, the founder of Rhode Island, Roger Williams, and his wife arrived in Boston from England. According to the link, Roger Williams was born in England, was a Puritan (see: boring ), and preached to the natives. You can tell I read it real closely, can't you?

In 1881, Phoenix, Ariz., was incorporated. 103 years later, we had Kids Incorporated.

In 1917, Congress passed, over President Wilson’s veto, an immigration act severely curtailing the influx of Asians.

Unlke congress, President Wilson knew the value that they would bring to the dry cleaning businesses, resteraunts, martial ats movies, and massage parlors that I have just stereotyped the entire culture into.

In 1917, Mexico’s constitution was adopted.

In 1958, Gamel Abdel Nasser was formally nominated to become the first president of the new United Arab Republic.

In 1962, French President Charles De Gaulle called for Algeria’s independence. That took ALOT of Gaulle.

(OK, that was bad. Even I can admit it. )

In 1973, services were held at Arlington National Cemetery for Army Lt. Col. William B. Nolde, the last American soldier killed before the Vietnam cease-fire.

In 1981, a military jury in North Carolina convicted Marine Pfc. Robert Garwood of collaborating with the enemy while a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

In 1983, former Gestapo official Klaus Barbie, expelled from Bolivia, was brought to Lyon, France, to stand trial. (He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison—he died in 1991.)

In 1994, white separatist Byron De La Beckwith was convicted in Jackson, Miss., of ing civil rights leader Medgar Evers in 1963, and was immediately sentenced to life in prison. (Beckwith died Jan. 21, 2001, at age 80.)

Super Bowl Sunday

Many of you have been waiting for my breakdown of the game. I had originally thought of breaking it down position by position each day, and revealing my pick today. But depression and other issues have prevented me from posting. So, I'm forced to pack it all in today.

The problem with making a Super Bowl prediction at any point before kickoff, is that there is so much pressure associated with the game, that it can make the most normal of men and act out in strange and bizarre ways. You've got your Eugene Robinsons (arrested the night before trying to get oral loving from a professional lover), your Stanley Wilsons (Bengals player who had some issues),and your Barret Robbins' (Raiders player who went AWOL the night before teh game). Barring any player making some pre-game faux pas that provides a huge distraction to their teammates, and taking their attention away from the game, I'll make my predition now.

THe Philadelphia Eagles ahve gotten where they are now because of a stout defense that is great against both the run and the pass, along with an offense that has an average running game, and a better than average passing game that becomse a good passing game when Terrell Owens is 100% healthy and performing at his best. WHat shouldn't be overlooked however, is the karma of the Philadelphia Eagles s. Because of the commitment they have made over the past few years in putting out the best calenders money can buy, they have created a wealth of good feelings and positive vbes around the team, which has finally swelled to left them to the penultimate game.

Giving credit where credit is due...

However, the s cannot play the game for the players, so we will turn to them for the answers we need to determine a winner.

TheEagles offensive line is a group that well represents Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania ing eneral, as it is comprised of a bunch of blue collar grunts that show up to do their job. There isn't anyone amongst them that stands out, or is clearly better than anyone else at their position. To be blunt, they are average. They are fortunate to have the QB that ehy do in donovan McNabb, who can move around and avoid alot of the pressure, makig the line look better than they are. They are not particularly great at run blocking..only mediocre. They are slightly better at pass blocking, which is why the Eagles are a predominantly pass-first offense. Well, that and that most of their offensive talent is WR's and TE's. In fact, the RB's are best known for their ability to catch the ball more than they are known for running the ball. It seems so weird to do so early in the breakdown, but I think this unit will decide if the Eagles are able to win this game or not. If they are able to give McNabb the time he needs to find his targets,a nd are able to open up some holes or the running back to get 2-3 long gains within the game, the Eagles can win it. However, if they get confused by the complex looks that the Patriots can throw at them, or succumb to their swarming tactics, the Patriots will make short work of the Philly offense.

Much has been made about whether or not Terrell Owens will play, and how much, and how effective he will be. he's said himself that he is going to play, and he's going to be just as effective, even if he isn't completely healed. If he does play, I would expect that the Patriots defensiv backs are going to be smacking their lips, because they will play him close and physical, and bump him at the line, and really work him over if he catches the ball. owens has been known in his days with the 49ers to drop some very catchable balls, especially when he was about to get hit. The Patriots happen to ahve one of he biggest hitters in Robert Harrison. It wouldn't surprise me if Terrell short arms some of the passes, or coems up just shy of some of them over the middle. Especially since he hasn't taken any hits with the ankle yet. Their is a mental barrier ofr him as to hw much he can trust it, and he won't know until he is hit for that first time.

All of that said, I don't think TO's prsence is goign to be that much of a factor in whether or not the Eagles win tomorrow. the egales havewon plenty of big games before he came to the team, and they won every playoff game so far withour him suiting up...they can definately do it again with or without him. The WR's on the roster after him are not anywhere near as talented, but they are serviceable. Freddy Mitchell has gotten alot of attention, but most of it being or his wisecracks. He's a clever guy, but his best asset to this team are his hands, not his mouth. In that respect, he's good, but he's not on that premier level yet. On the other side, they have Todd Pinkston, who has all the speed in the world, but is too shy to get hit, nd has only marginal hands. Any time he's in the game, he has to be the 3rd or 4th option because he's just not trustworthy.

The tight end will be a bigger factor because of the shaky reliability of those Wr's mentioned before. LJ Smith was a part time starter and the future at the position for the Eagles BEFORE they lost Chad Lewis to injury, so this is his biggest and best chance to take the role on permanently. Behind him is te media story of the year, forme Packer and Eagle TE Jeff Thomason, who left his construction job and is using his vacation time to play in the Super Bowl. thiswill proabbly be as close as it gets to the coaches calling one of the fans out of the stands to play for the team.

The primary weapon (beyond the QB himself) for the Eagles is Brian Westbrook, who is adept at catching passes out of the backfield, ro ocasionally lining upas a Wr. He gets most of his yards that way, though I don't know if that is because the line isn' all that great at blocking, o if he's just not that great of a RB. I'm more likely to blame the line, since he does a pretty good job once he ahs the ball in hand. His speed and quickness is contrasted nicely by Dorsey Levens, the backup, who has much more of a straight-ahead hammer the ball up the middle type of attack. If Dorsey Levens is in the game, it's going to be a run between teh tackles, or he is there as an extra pass-blocker. If Westbrook is in there, he can do some of the stuff between the tackels, but isn't great for the hard yardage. His forte' is more the sweeps and stuff off tackle, and the screens and motion plays they have.

The Eagles greatest threat however, is the man taht gets Westbrook the ball, Donovan McNabb. Years ago, he was the QB that I wanted the Bears to draft, but instead he went before the Bears had a chance. He's always been a Daily Update favorite since then, and has improved himself year after year. He also presents the Patriots with a type of Qb that they haven't face d in a while, in that he can scamble for yards when he has to, whereas Peyton Manning and Ben Rothlisberger were too slow to do that during the playoffs.

My guess is that they're going to concentrate on getttng the ball to the TE's and RB's thorughout the game,a dn only occasionally going to the deeper routes to the WR's when they have to. And only then to Mitchell or TO, if TO is able to play normally. Considering the weakened state of the Patriots defensive backs, most teams would try to attack there on the outside and work in. But I just don't think the Eagles have the talent at WR to pull that off. They'll also have to avoid turnovers. Anything more than 1 turnover will probably spell doom for the Eagles chances.

Something to break up the monotony:

Bai Ling, everyone.

Ah, to heck with it. I've run out of time.

The Patriots haven't done anything to make you pick against them. Patriots win this one despite heavy pressure from a good Philly defense.
